Concrete Work in an Old River City
In Schenectady, the work concrete contractors do is shaped by how old and how tightly built it is. The 2020 census counted 67,047 people and 30,634 housing units inside roughly 11 square miles. That is a lot of front steps, sidewalks, short driveways and back patios packed close together, and much of that concrete has been poured, patched and poured again over many decades.
A city built up, then thinned out
Schenectady peaked at about 95,000 residents in 1930 and fell by nearly a third between 1950 and the late 20th century. The houses stayed. That history explains a lot of what we see: concrete that was installed when the city was full and then went years without real maintenance. Walks heaved by tree roots, steps with crumbling treads, driveways patched in three different decades, garage floors that were never sealed.
For most homes here, the job is not a fresh pour on open ground. It is careful removal and replacement on a tight lot, with a neighbor's fence on one side and a city sidewalk on the other.
The Stockade: small lots, old foundations
The Stockade Historic District covers about 82 acres along the Mohawk River. Its houses are mostly small two-story attached buildings, and the district's listed construction period runs from 1735 to 1800. The city council recognized it as a historic district in 1962, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Concrete work around houses that old calls for restraint. Front steps and walks sit right against foundations that were never designed for modern drainage. When we rebuild a stoop or a side walk here, we pitch the new surface away from the wall, keep the height in line with the existing entry, and avoid heavy equipment against old masonry. Because the district has local historic standing, we also check with the city before any work that shows from the street.
The Realty Plot and other early-1900s streets
The General Electric Realty Plot, just east of Union College, covers about 90 acres. Roughly a hundred houses went up there between 1900 and 1927, mostly Colonial Revival and Georgian Revival, and 6 Douglas Road is described as the nation's first all-electric "Gold Medallion" house. Neighborhoods of that era usually have long, narrow driveways leading to a detached garage at the back of the lot.
Those driveways are often the oldest concrete on the property. Replacement means rebuilding the base, adding control joints at sensible spacing, and setting the new slab so water runs to the street or the lawn instead of toward the garage door. We can also pour a new garage slab when an old floor has sunk or cracked into pieces.
Freeze, thaw and salt
Schenectady has no official weather station, but local observers estimate a January average of about 23 degrees. Winters like that mean water in the concrete freezes and thaws over and over, and salt on walks and steps speeds up surface scaling. Every exterior slab we pour here uses air-entrained concrete, which gives that water room to expand. We finish it with a broom texture for grip, cure it properly and recommend a penetrating sealer once it has cured.
What we do in Schenectady
- Sidewalks & Steps: front stoops, side walks and entry steps on older homes, rebuilt to the existing height
- Concrete Driveways: removal and replacement on narrow city lots, with new base and joints
- Garage & Shed Slabs: floors for detached garages and backyard sheds
- Concrete Patios: small back-yard patios where space is tight
- Stamped Concrete: brick, slate or cobble patterns that suit an older streetscape
- Concrete Repair & Replacement: a straight answer on whether a slab can be patched or needs to come out
City sidewalks and curbs can carry their own rules. Before any work in the public right-of-way, we check with the City of Schenectady on what is required and plan the job around it.
Schenectady Facts That Shape Concrete Work
- Dense housing. The 2020 census counted 67,047 residents and 30,634 housing units in about 11 square miles, roughly 6,200 people per square mile.
- The Stockade. An 82-acre district of mostly small attached houses built between 1735 and 1800, recognized locally as a historic district in 1962.
- GE Realty Plot. About 90 acres east of Union College where roughly a hundred houses were built from 1900 to 1927, mostly in Colonial Revival styles.
- Cold winters. Local amateur observers estimate an average January temperature of about 22.9 degrees, so exterior concrete faces many freeze-thaw cycles.

Schenectady Questions
Can you replace the front steps on a house in the Stockade?
Yes. We rebuild steps at the existing entry height and keep the work light around old foundations. Because the Stockade is a local historic district, we check with the city first on anything visible from the street.
My Realty Plot driveway runs to a garage at the back. Can it be replaced in sections?
Often it can. If the base is sound under part of it, we can remove and pour the failed sections and tie them in with proper joints. If the whole base has failed, we tell you that full replacement makes more sense.
Who handles the city sidewalk in front of my house?
Sidewalks in the public right-of-way can have separate city rules. We check with the City of Schenectady before quoting that part of the work so you know what applies.
