Older Homes, Steep Streets
Amsterdam's housing was largely built for a much bigger city, and that shapes the work of concrete contractors here. The city peaked at 34,817 residents in 1930, when its carpet mills made it the country's carpet and rug manufacturing center. By 2020 it had 18,219 residents and 9,070 housing units. Many of those homes date from the mill years, and their steps, walks and driveways show their age.
Mill-city housing
The Bigelow-Sanford and Mohawk Mills carpet companies once anchored the city, and both have since moved away. The neighborhoods that housed their workers remain. Older homes here often sit on narrow lots, close to the street, with front steps that climb from a public sidewalk and short driveways or none at all. Common repairs:
- Steps with crumbling treads or settled bottom risers
- Walks broken into tilted slabs
- Retaining edges and walks along steep side yards
- Small parking pads that have sunk near the street
Creeks and slopes
The Mohawk River runs through Amsterdam south of downtown, and North and South Chuctanunda Creeks flow into it within the city. Steep creeks descend toward the river from the foothills, and the city's listed elevation is 360 feet. On sloped lots, every concrete job needs a plan for water coming from uphill. We pitch walks and steps so water sheds sideways off them, place drains where runoff concentrates, and use textured finishes so steep walks stay usable in winter.
Flood history
Amsterdam suffered serious flood damage in late August 2011, linked to Hurricane Irene. Properties near the river and creeks can face high water and saturated soil. On those lots, concrete work starts with drainage and base: a thicker compacted gravel layer, slabs set a little above surrounding grade, and no low spots where water can stand against a foundation.
Repair or replace
On older Amsterdam homes, Concrete Repair & Replacement is often the starting point. If a step is solid at its core with surface damage, repair may be enough. If it is cracked through or separating from the house, it needs to be rebuilt. We explain the difference and give you a clear quote for each. Where only one or two panels of a walk have sunk, we can cut them out and pour new ones flush with the rest, which keeps the cost down without leaving a trip hazard behind.
Patios and parking pads
Flat ground is precious on Amsterdam's slopes. A poured patio can create a level outdoor space on a hillside lot, sometimes with a few steps down from the back door and a short retaining edge to hold the grade. A parking pad beside the house gets cars off steep streets in winter. Both need a compacted base on firm ground and careful drainage so water coming downhill goes around the slab, not under it. We plan the layout on site with you, walking the lot to see where water runs during a storm.
We use air-entrained concrete with a broom finish on all outdoor work, and recommend a penetrating sealer after curing.
Downspouts on steep lots
On older homes we also check how gutters and downspouts discharge near the concrete. On a steep lot, a downspout dumping beside a walk can undercut it within a few seasons, so we suggest extensions or splash blocks as part of the job, and we pitch new walks so water crosses them sideways instead of running down their length. We check with the City of Amsterdam on permits and public sidewalk rules before scheduling.

Amsterdam Questions
My Amsterdam steps climb steeply from the sidewalk. Can you make them safer?
Yes. We lay out even risers, add a landing if the flight is long, use a textured finish and set railing anchors in the new concrete.
My property is near the creek. Does that change how you pour a slab?
Yes. We build a thicker compacted base, set the slab a bit above grade and grade the ground so water drains away.
Do you handle small repairs, or only full replacements?
Both. If a repair will last, we recommend it. If the base has failed, we explain why replacement is the better choice.
