Growth You Can See in the Driveways
Malta has grown in every census since 1950, and concrete contractors here see it in the mix of homes. The town had 1,882 residents in 1950, 6,968 by 1980, 11,709 by 1990 and 17,130 in 2020. Each wave left its own neighborhoods, so a Malta concrete job might be a 1970s driveway that has finally failed or a patio for a house built a few years ago.
Why Malta keeps growing
Malta and neighboring Stillwater share the Luther Forest Technology Campus, a 1,414-acre site for semiconductor and other advanced manufacturing. In April 2021, GlobalFoundries moved its headquarters from Silicon Valley to its chip plant in Malta. Employment like that brings new households, and new households tend to want patios, walkways and extra parking.
Projects for newer homes
Typical projects on newer Malta homes:
- Concrete Patios off the back of the house, often larger than the builder's small stoop
- Stamped Concrete in slate, flagstone or wood-plank patterns
- Driveway extensions for a third car or a parking pad beside the garage
- Garage & Shed Slabs for storage buildings and detached garages
On a new house, the yard is usually graded to move water in a specific direction. We design new slabs to keep that path open, not block it.
Lakes on both sides
Saratoga Lake forms part of Malta's eastern boundary, and Round Lake lies in the western part of town, next to the village of Round Lake, which began as a Methodist camp meeting in 1868. About 3.5 square miles of the town's 31.5 are water. Homes near either lake can sit on damp ground, and for those we build a deeper compacted base and pay close attention to grading so water never collects under or against a slab.
Replacing older work
Not everything in Malta is new. Homes from the 1970s and 1980s growth waves now have driveways and walks that are 40 to 50 years old. When those need replacement, we remove the old concrete, rebuild the base and pour air-entrained concrete with joints at proper spacing. Concrete Repair & Replacement of individual sunken panels is an option when the rest of the slab is sound.
Choosing a finish
Not every patio needs a pattern. For a clean, modern look, a plain broom finish with a smooth tooled border works well and costs less than stamping. Exposed aggregate shows the stone in the mix and gives good grip. Stamped concrete offers the most variety, from slate to wood plank. Colored concrete can be paired with any of these. For pool surrounds and steps, we lean toward finishes with good traction. We bring samples to the estimate so you can see and feel the options before deciding.
Whatever finish you choose, the slab underneath is built the same way: compacted base, proper thickness, reinforcement and joints.
Steps and walks
The front entry on many Malta homes was built to a minimum: a narrow walk and two or three steps with a small landing. Rebuilding it gives you the chance to widen the walk, deepen the landing so a storm door opens without crowding you, and even out the risers, with a broom finish for winter grip. We check with the Town of Malta, or the Village of Round Lake if you live there, about any permit your project needs before we schedule the work.

Malta Questions
Can you add a parking pad beside my Malta driveway?
Yes. We cut a clean edge, build a base for the new section and tie it in with a joint so the pad and driveway stay level and can move independently.
Does living near Saratoga Lake change how a patio is built?
Damp ground near the lake calls for a deeper, well-compacted base and careful grading so water drains away from the slab.
Is it worth replacing a 1980s driveway or just sealing it?
If it is level with only tight cracks, cleaning and sealing may be enough. If panels have sunk or the surface is scaling widely, replacement lasts longer. We check it in person.
